Signs of bronchitis: Bronchitis means inflammation of the bronchioles, which are your airways. Signs may include cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, and fever. It is difficult to distinguish an upper respiratory infection, from a lower one, which is what bronchitis is. Your physician can determine this with an examination of your lungs and possibly a chest x-ray, though an x-ray is not always necessary.

Acute or chronic?: Acute bronchitis is often manifested by a cough productive of discolored mucous and often accompanies URI symptoms. A fever and body aches may also be present and it can have either a bacterial or viral etiology.
