Depends: Extremity surgery, where limb swelling occurs, the risk for dvt/deep venous thrombosis continues until swelling resolves. Other surgeries, the DVT risk continues until patients are up walking with ease. Hypercoagulable conditions carry higher DVT risk. Most DVT prophylaxis ends by 3 months or sooner. Report swelling to your surgeon.
