Depo (hormone): The contraception shot is known as depo-provera or dmpa. It is a hormone similar to one made by the body called progesterone. It works primarily by preventing ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary. One shot lasts for 3 months. Possible side effects: changes in menstruation, weight gain, and headache. Depo is not right for everyone - discuss with your dr. If this is a good choice for you.
