Surgery necessary: It is unlikely that once a pregnancy is established it will end in miscarriage in the usual sense. A rupture of the ectopic pregnancy is technically a miscarriage except that it does not pass through the vaginal passage but ruptures inside the pelvis. If the pregnancy is totally outside the uterus, which is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy the fetus does not survive.
