Is it possible to maintain your independence with macular degeneration?

3 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Depends: Fortunately, the majority of people with macular degeneration will only have mild to moderate visual impairment. Only about 10% will have severe vision loss. Depending on the degree of impairment, certain optometrists who specialize in "low vision" or vision rehabilitation can help you adapt, allowing you to maintain independence for a wide range of activities. Your ophthalmologist can refer you.

Use light, see a low: Vision specialist to help you maintain as much independence as possible. Sometimes low vision aids can enable you to read and write on your own. There is no doubt that loss of autonomy and independence is experienced by many with amd. Use of profuse light is also beneficial. Low vision specialists usually are known to eye doctors but may require a referral. Do not give up! good luck.
