A member asked:

I accidentally inhaled steam when opening my oven which was set to 450 degrees f. im having throat and chest pain but no breathing difficulties currently. do you think a visit to the er is necessary? is it safe to sleep post-injury?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The damage of superheated air, like those afflicted in house fires has a rapid onset. If you are not facing difficulty breathing it is most likely any injury was minor and your body has compensated well. By a few hours after exposure if you have not developed more than the symptoms mentioned, it is doubtful an ER visit would be worth the effort. Sleep would be fine. The body wakes you for trouble.
