Strong vaginal odor usually indicates bacterial vaginosis, which is an over growth of mostly normal vaginal bacteria. Although BV is not very common in women who haven't had sex, it can happen. As you suspect, it would be best to not begin to be sexual until this problem is resolved. See a doctor for diagnosis and treatment; prescription antibiotics are necessary. Good luck.
