Secondary syphilis, beginning 1 to 2 months after the primary stage (or syphilis), is characterized by fever, muscle aches, rash, mucocutaneous lesions, and diffuse swelling of lymph nodes. Malaise, headache, and arthralgia also can be present. This stage resolves spontaneously without treatment in 3 to 12 weeks.
