It depends on how long ago the surgery was -- maybe no problem if it's just a couple of hours, maybe dangerous if a day or more (especially not being able to urinate). Also depends on the kind of surgery. Get in touch with his doctor; the post-op instructions undoubtedly have numbers to call if things aren't going right or if any uncertainty about it. Good luck to him.
