The hormones that turn a urine pregnancy test positive are detectable 2-3 weeks after exposure. A test can be done any time but can be falsely negative if taken before enough hormones are made to trigger the test. Waiting until after menses is expected can usually produce a valid test. Tests are rarely falsely positive.
