Herpes virus is spread easily, and any "sharing" of utensils, cups or oral contact with mucus membranes can infect the recipient individual. The virus is carried inside the cell membranes, attached to the nucleus, and "outbreaks" allowing spread are followed by ulcerations which convey the virus to others.
