I don't recall pooping being drawn out when i was younger, but now (i'm 63) it comes in waves. i will think i'm done and then i'll have to go back to the toilet to finish up, maybe a few to several minutes in total. is this normal for older people?

I don't think it's an unusual complaint in older people & could be attributable to weaker muscles used for bowel movements & incomplete evacuation can occur even with softish stool. Inability to relax the anal sphincter is probably not an issue with older people. However if incomplete evacuation of stool is a persistent problem, it's prudent to have an evaluation by your MD,or gastroenterologist
