After intercourse, the sperm travels into the uterus and up the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg. Cell division begins and what is now called a zygote begins to grow. After a few days, it travels down the tube to implant itself on the uterine wall. As the placenta develops, it produces HCG, which we measure to detect pregnancy. The day you had a positive test isn't the day you became pregnant.
