Inflammation: Most commonly inflammation of the joint can be exacerbated with weight bearing and in this case (with ankle) walking. Try resting the ankle, using an ace wrap, icing it if it swollen and keeping it elevated. Take an NSAID like aleve (naproxen) or Motrin to decrease inflammation. Then after a few days, slowly restart using it as tolerable. If the pain returns, see a dr. For a thorough exam.

Trauma: There is a good chance that you injured yourself unknowingly. There are many questions about your problem that have to be answered. Is there swelling and/or discoloration of the area. Immobilization of the area with a device like an ace bandage can be done with an accurate diagnosis after seeing your foot doctor.

More information: There are many causes for ankle pain and a complete examination and history is required to offer a more complete picture of possible diagnoses. Location of the pain, aggravating factors, modifying factors, and quality of the pain are helpful.
