Blood in semen: Please get to your family physician as soon as possible. If this symptom has been present for more than one day you need to be seen immediately.
Simple short lived blood in semen may represent an infection in the prostate gland.
But, this gland is well known for developing cancer. You need to be checked. Today.

Hematospermia: Hematospermia (bloody semen) is almost always caused by a benign condition in younger men & in many cases no clear cause is identified. In older men w/ hematospermia, genitourinary cancer such as prostate cancer is considered in the evaluation process. Even in older males with hematospermia, etiology is rarely found to be neoplastic in nature. Urology consultation is a safe option for older males.

Dr. Andrew McCullough answered

Usually not serious: Blood in the semen by itself without any other symptoms is not usually a harbinger of bad things.
Of course all men are afraid of prostate cancer, std's or infection.
Many urologists will place patients emprically on antbiotics but usually th blood disappears with time.

See a urologist: Blood in the seman (hematospermia) is often a benign finding. However, if it is recurrent, an evaulation should be done to look for serious causes such as infection, tumor and rarely, parasites. In the few studies done, men over 40 appear at higher risk for serious causes. But regaurdless of age, you should see a urologist for proper evaluation.

No way to tell...: Because many men don't lift boxes at work but still get an episode of blood in semen, there is no way to tell if an individual got his blood in his semen due to his lifting of boxes.
