There are several causes from pathology in the lung or heart lining but a more likely cause in your case would be a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between 2 ribs. The pain with a deep breath is sharp and fleeting. There is no associated cough or shortness of breath when the pain isn't present. These usually resolve on their own. If not, see your MD for evaluation.
