The colon extracts moisture from the stool so the longer it sits/the dryer/harder it gets. Teaching yourself to go more often, adding fluid to your diet/adding fiber all help. Waiting for the urge to go when things are slow increases the problem.

You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods.
