What does it mean if tretinoin 0.05% doesnt work but adapalene works for acne?

Nothing specific. Generally everyone is an individual when it comes to their skin composition and you work through various products until you find one that works well for you.

It could also mean that you don't have the kind of acne lesions -- namely, comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) that tretinoin is best at treating. Or it could mean that your acne was naturally starting to subside at the time you started using adapalene. But I agree that everyone is different and you should use whatever products work best for you.
