It may be one of the many nonsexually transmitted HPV types, as are common hand and foot warts. Or maybe sexually transmitted: all sexually active persons acquire HPV, and as you already understand, HPV can be dormant for many years and then reactivate. If your doctor is an otolaryngologist or oral medicine specialist, s/he probably is very knowledgeable and you can trust the no follow-up advice.
