If there is an "active" painful ulcer on your lips or gums, antiviral meds can assist in shortening the duration of the ulcer. If a sore is in the genital area, antivirals will work as well. See your gyn physician for an exam and medication. HSV is very contagious, but is in a dormant stage and unaffected by medication until emerging as a painful sore: not possible to "cure" this virus.

Need for treatment depends on location (oral versus genital) and the frequency and severity of outbreaks. For both oral herpes (cold sores) and genital, HSV1 outbreaks usually are infrequent and preventive treatment isn't necessary or helpful. Individual outbreaks can be treated with oral acyclovir or valacyclovir. Genital HSV1 is rarely transmitted by sex, but avoid sex during outbreaks.
