A member asked:

I had unprotected sex three days before removal of my mirena. is it possible that i can become pregnant from that sex? its been 22 days since that sex, pregnancy tests are negative as of today?

Although viable sperm can survive for 48-72 hours, the likelihood of pregnancy is minimal, as the contraception afforded by the Mirena creates an unfavorable endometrium for fertilization. If your cycles have been regular, and your period is delayed, obtain a serum HCG test to be certain about pregnancy.

Conception occurs within day or so of the sex. It takes about 3 weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG for a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully.
