Neurologists can as a part of medical/diagnostic team diagnose autism. The important caveat is indeed the training, interest, and experience of the physician. Usually in the case of a child, this involves developmental assessment, speech pathology assessment, and pediatric/ adult neurology exams. Lifespan diagnosis can present a marked challenge for individuals differently trained.
