A member asked:

Is physical therapy an effective treatment for avascular necrosis? the pain is becoming unbearable and my ortho surgeon doesn't want to do surgery?

It depends: Pt is definitely worth a try especially if your avn is mild. However early disease is usually treated with non-weight bearing. I am a little confused here because if the disease is fairly early the orthopedist will suggest core depression. You may want to get a 2nd opinion.

Avascular necrosis: This can affect many boney areas . My guess as to why your orthopedist doesn't want to do surgery is because you are young and many of these cases resolve without surgery. Remember - you can always do surgery. What you can't do is undo it . Good luck !
