VP shunts are prone to infection. Most infections occur within first several weeks after implantation but risk never entirely goes away, even after many years. Source of “late onset” infections not known, may be trivial break in skin (often unrecognized) near shunt site or minor “spontaneous” bacteremia (everyone gets periodically, generally unrecognized).
