A member asked:

When p24 antigen in hiv decreases & is no longer detectable does the antibody directly becomes detected or both could be undetectable at the same time & if so when does the p24 become undetectable & can both be undetectable at 4 months post exposure?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

“Window” period: p24 antigen is a component of the HIV virus. It used to be used alone to detect HIV (it’s less expensive) but is now combined in the 4th generation antigen/antibody test. Early in the infection when treatment has just been started p24 can fall to undetectable levels before antibodies have appeared (the “window” period). Antibodies may not appear for 2-4 weeks, depending on antibody test used
