A member asked:

Is diatomaceous earth safe for skin contact? i recently learned about bath mats that contain diatomaceous earth. i'm guessing yes since they sell them but since it's used to kill bugs i worry if it should be exposed to skin?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Diatomaceous earth is just loaded with long dead diatoms, a form of algae that populated the ocean depths millions of years ago. Except for the rare risk of a personal allergy to this material like you might for strawberries/eggs it is just dry/inert casings of dead algae. It is also used by farmers to plug leaks in ponds.
