Streasam: I don't think that this is unusual with antianxiety medications. To prove he's having these side effects, he could taper off the medication gradually over a week or so by taking 1/2 the dose for 3 nights, 1/4 for 3 nights and then, if possible, 1/8 for 2 nights. If side effect clears, ask his MD to try a different medication.
