? gentian violet ?: You may be referring to gentian violet which is a dye with some anti-germ properties. It is an old time treatment for thrush that kills the yeast on direct contact. It is quite messy & stains anything it come in contact with. It is also used in laboratories to stain various samples & help identify them under the microscope.
