Vein: Most likely cause would be due to some type of infection, irritation or allergy to tonsils. However other causes would be problems that cause venous congestion. People with heart problems such as congestive heart failure or lung problems that cause decreased venous return to chest could cause this or a blood clot in the superior vena cava or veins draining the tonsil.
