A member asked:

If im on birthcontrol is it ok to have a period for three weeks?

No: It is never normal to have three full weeks of menstruation. An average period lasts about 4-7 days. It would be a good idea to discuss the length of your periods with your doctor.

No: Obviously, there are other medical conditions that are "overriding the pill" and causing prolonged bleeding for 3 weeks. Continued and prolonged bleeding can also cause anemia(low blood levels). Have your doctor exam you for uterine fibroids, bleeding/clotting factor disorders such as von willebrands disease, and thyroid malfunctions.Depo-provera(the shot) can also cause 3 week bleeding normally.
