Doctor can evaluate: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (Tamiflu may be started from the first 2 days), or from some other cause such as allergies, irritants, or stomach acid reflux. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly. A couple days of throat lozenges can temporarily lessen pain.
