A member asked:

Age 42, missed period for the past 4 months. not pregnant. periods were as regular as clockwork before then. went to doc, discovered 2 large asymptomatic fibroid (9 cm and 7 cm) on ultrasound. doc says open myomectomy is necessary. is it really?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Fibroid ?'s: Missing a period for "four months" at 42 is not unusual, as pituitary production of FSH will need to increase to stimulate ovulation, as your "eggs" require more at this point in female life. The two "large asymptomatic fibroids" are not necessary to remove, but may continue to enlarge over time. Ask your gyn about low dose bcp's which have much lower estrogen than ovarian cycles.
