A member asked:

I was taking my birth control pill yesterday, mircette. i accidentally chew on it instead swallowing whole. i immediately swallowed the broken pill with water. would it reduce its effectiveness? am i still protected? m worried

Sounds ok: One can ask her prescribing doctor if there is any problem with cutting or breaking up her birth control pill. In general, birth control pills can be broken up and swallowed as long as all the pieces are taken at the same time (to mimic swallowing an intact pill). Some medications are delayed-release, or extended- or sustained-release, and have special features such that they should not be broken.
