Doctor, ER can check: Generally, if a patient is rapidly losing function of one or more limbs, that is an emergency and can be evaluated in the ER... unless the cause is already known and loss of function has been expected. If loss of function is slow and gradual, a patient can usually be evaluated as an outpatient unless weakness has become dangerous such as in difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing.
