Hypocupraemia: Treatment includes management of the underlying cause and copper supplementation. No studies have investigated with the dose, route, duration, or formulation of copper for supplementation. Guidelines recommend routine oral copper supplementation (2 mg/d). Periodic assessment of serum copper is essential to determine adequacy of replacement.

Diet: How do you know that you lack copper. If you are eating a regular mixed diet, it is highly unlikely that you are deficient in copper. Have a healthy diet, exercise 30 minutes/day, drink plenty of water, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. For nutrition: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/.

Copper supplement: The U.S. recommendations for dietary copper for adult men and women is 0.9 mg (1 mg if pregnant or breastfeeding). Unsure if the recommendation’s different in South Africa. If taken as a supplement to prevent deficiency, 1.5-2.5 mg is recommended. It’s available in a variety of strengths. If you have a documented deficiency, your dose should be determined by your doctor.
