STD's w/o treatment : It would be difficult "not to know" if most STD's were present, as most provide symptoms which require an exam by a physician. Syphillis can last undetected for many years, but routine testing can detect its presence. HIV can also go undetected until its effects are noticed with other kinds of infection ("opportunistic").
