Some basics: BCP's work primarily by keeping a hormone level in your system that prevents egg release when it would otherwise. Used consistently (no missed doses) it is quite effective. The pill effectiveness does not wain over time as do some pain meds. Any form of BC has a failure rate & the pill approaches 1%/yr. You may want to discuss an IUD or other system with your OBGYN if you want to change.
