A member asked:

Starting birth control, is it okay to start mid cycle? period due in 11 days. im taking it to regulate and stop spotting before my periods.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

"Spotting" ?'s: Spotting before periods if one is not on oral contraceptives may not be alleviated by starting bcp's. Also, do not rely on bcp's for contraception if starting "mid-cycle" as they will have no effect on "regulation". "Spotting" may be caused by conditions which are not relieved with oral contraceptives (fibroids, cervical inflammation, etc.) so see your gyn for an exam and treatment.
