A member asked:

Is zinc oxide safe to ingest as its seen in some multivitamins or should i avoid this form of zinc? it is absorbable? noticed its used in sunscreens

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The basics: Zinc is a necessary co-factor in human metabolism. It is commonly found in a normal diet in things like chicken/red meats/fortified cereal. The recommended daily intake is 8 mg for women/11 mg form men & max 40 mg/d for adults. Excesses can interfere with medications & cause issues like watery diarrhea, lethargy, chills, yellowing of the white of the eyes & more. It is safe at recommended levels.
