In carriers: Chlamydia lives within cells. The variants that cause trachoma can also cause genital infections. Symptom free carriers can shed these germs can survive in ocular or genital secretions for more than 2 yrs. Passive or active contact can transfer the germ. The germ can survive briefly on contaminated objects/surfaces so these can be a source for rare infections. Unwashed fingers could be a source.
