28 years ago i was given subcutaneous brethine for 3 mo for pre-term labor. are there any *long-term* side effects for the baby, who is now an adult?

Not really: The medication mimics the actions of other natural chemicals meant to relax smooth muscle contractions. It was used extensively for years with specific effects identified for the offspring. If you are concerned about issues with that child I would look to another cause, not this med.

Not known: The main side effect of terbutaline/ brethine is rapid heart beat, and if given during pregnancy, this can also effect the baby's heart beat. What effect this has long term is, unfortunately, not known. Side effects of medication to stop labor always needs to be weighed against side effects of prematurity, and the current stance is, "less is best," but this was not always the case 28 y ago.
