Strep or viral: The combination of inflamed throat and a reddish rash could be a strep infection with scarlet fever presentation. Get a rapid throat culture to look for strep. If negative, a viral infection or infectious mononucleosis would be possibilities. If positive for strep, penicillin is the antibiotic of choice.
