Basic: Have a blood pressure machine at home and document twice daily for your doc to review. And certainly have a primary care doc. No reason to wait.

A 40-year-old member asked:

How low does someone's blood pressure have to be to hold a blood pressure medication?

It depends.: A blood pressure is too low if a person feels light-headed or faint. For many patients a blood pressure below 100 systolic (the upper number in the blood pressure reading) is too low. However some patients with congestive heart failure may do better with a lower reading. A rapid drop in blood pressure may cause symptoms even though the reading may not be very low.

Bed Time BP pills: There are some blood vpressure pills you should not take at bed time. These are the ones which contain a diuretic, because it will wake you up more then one time to pass urine as thats the effect of these medicines, but others you can take at bed time without the water pills or combination with water pill.
A 30-year-old member asked:

How do doctors pick what class of blood pressure medication to use for different people ?

Dr. Michael Klein
Family Medicine 21 years experience
Depends on disease: Certain diseases require a particular class of BP meds to be used first. Diabetes usually requires a class called ace inhibitors or arbs if there has been problems with ace in past. People who have had heart disease require beta blockers such as metoprolol first. Others begin with diuretics in many cases. Personal factors, such as allergies, cost and side effects can also affect choice.
A 34-year-old member asked:

Dr. Michael Sinclair

Lots of things: Too low of a blood pressure and possibly a low pulse. That can lead to dizziness, weakness, fatigue, etc. Making asthma worse is possible. Coughing, hives, swelling, tingling scalp, urination, and many others. Even so, carefully chosen, BP meds can save your life. Don't try to figure this out on your own, find a doc you trust and them guide you.

Depends: How high is your blood pressure? How much do you weigh? Do you exercise? Mild hypertension may be controlled by being on salt restricted diet, losing weight and exercising. If you are on medication do not stop without discussin with your doctor.
