Spotting with BCP's : without knowing the pill it sounds like the hormone levels need to be rebalanced. Given your age you may need a higher dose of estrogen to control spotting. Discuss this with your doctor - Generally BCP's help with spotting or intermenstrual bleeding and don't cause it. Good luck

But some cases are serious, including STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia, among the most common causes of spotting in women your age (19). So don't take chances: check back with the doctor or clinic where the birth control was prescribed.
