Why...: ...do you need a medical excuse? What is the reason you don't want to drink socially and why can't you tell them the real reason?

Understandable: I can understand there might be situations where it is socially easier to give a "medical" reason instead of just a personal preference. You could tell them that a doctor told you to avoid alcohol because it inflames your liver. There...I just told you! And I'm a doctor.

Non-drinker: I agree that you don't need an excuse for not drinking. Perhaps you are simply looking for a phrase or two to offer to help things flow socially when you refuse a drink. Some people simply say "I don't drink but would love a seltzer" or "I did my drinking earlier on in life so a cup of tea or coffee would be great." Peace and good health.
