My seven year old has a cough for two weeks. ive been given general over the counter cough syrup but doesnt seem to help.

Needs to be examined: Coughing for 2 weeks is unusual for a simple cold. Sinus infection, asthma, and bronchitis/ viral pneumonia are on the top of the list of possible causes.

Wouldn't expect it : OTC cough meds have been thoroughly studied in the US & found to do little more than give you something to do in kids under 12. Cough is a protective mechanism that helps bring up retained mucus or debris from deep in the lung. If it doesn't interfere with the kids activities or sleep you can ignore it. If it does you should have an evaluation to see if an ongoing illness can be treated.
