Breast tenderness: At age 48, the ovaries do not respond to the pituitary stimulation necessary to produce ovulation, but in this process, the amount of estrogen produced is increase significantly, which has a stimulatory effect on breast size and tenderness. When ovulation does occur, this effect will diminish. You may prefer the much lower estrogen in oral bcp's, so discuss this with your gyn provider.
