Depends on type: There are daily contraceptive pills (smaller dose of hormones) and emergency pills (larger dose of hormones). Emergency pills do not need a prescription because they are only used once, twice, or three times in a woman's lifetime (they are not to be used as routine contraception). Daily pills create an ongoing change in hormones and need an exam before starting (refills can sometimes be online).
