Many causes: A person is bedridden when their disease state either causes them to be unable to tolerate other body positions or their have a disease state for which they must stay in bed. A very weak and chronically ill person with poor strength would be bedridden. A patient with bedsores on their buttocks (ischium) would also have to stay in bed. Muscular, or nerve diseases may make sitting impossible.
