Short/long term: In the short term you stop adding salt to foods and eliminate salted items like chips/pickled foods/etc. Salt retains water that drives up BP.Then you go in and let your doc sort out why your BP is up. For most, there is little to blame more than excess weight, lack of exercise & getting older. When this is the case you modify our lifestyle & get on BP meds. Loose enough weight & may not need 'em

Hypertension: You can try low salt diet and exercise, along with meditation and yoga but if you have more than a borderline hypertension, you're better off doing those and consulting and doctor for medication. If good control is obtained and you're sticking to the diet, exercise, etc. Can always try to back off the drugs at that point.
